Thanks Lee, cracking advice! I think I will get to hardware store (probably not B&Q as they'll invariably only sell them in bags of 50) and get a threaded bar, two nuts and a variety bag of washers. Then swing by Glyn's on the way back to borrow his hammer....!

This is a tough one as it depends on what size bearing you was to replace. I have never used one and have replace many bearings in the past. The fitting tool it just a length of threaded bar with swing handles on each end. YOu can buy a length of threaded bar from B&Q and two washers and nuts and it will do the same for a lot less. Also depending on the size of the bearing then some tools will not fit.

You should be able to tap these out with a small hammer and a length of bar/screw driver. Dont hit to hard and move the end of the bar/screwdriver around the bearing so to keep if on the same angle and the hole. If the bearning i shot then you dont care about it and the end of the screwdriver is softer than the bearing so no damage will happen.

Then fitting should be the same operation. Place bearing in the housing as far as it will go, then tap around the bearing and it should be very easy to put in. Light taps and keep moving around the bearing. You do not want it to move in to far on each tap.

Or spend a shed load on Tools that might fit this time but not next time as o big or small.

cheers
lee
If at first you dont succeed, spend 6 hrs in casualty, then try again !!!

I usually like to wait till after I've f#kced it up using the right tools before resorting to the old faithful 'one tool to rule them all'.

Do any budding home mechanics in the club have bearing removal / press tools that I could borrow? (or experience of changing bearings they'd like to share...). Willing to leave beer based non-refundable deposit. :)
